KIA Set to Introduce a New Rival to the Hilux Pickup
Korean automaker Kia is making strategic moves to enter the medium pickup truck market and directly compete with established players like Toyota, Isuzu, and Ford. In an exciting announcement on social media, Kia revealed its plans to develop and launch a pickup truck by 2024, setting the stage for a showdown with popular models such as the Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max, and Ford Ranger. Internally known as the TK (Truck Kia) project, Kia aims to make its mark in this competitive segment.
A spokesperson for Kia in Australia officially confirmed the company's endeavor and expressed confidence in the truck's functionality and suitability for its intended purpose. Dealers have also been informed about the truck's diesel-powered engine, offering an impressive payload capacity of 1,000 kg and a towing capacity of 3,500 kg, aligning with the capabilities of the Hilux and Ranger.
The forthcoming Kia truck will be available in both single and double-cab variants, with customers having the choice between 4x4 or rear-wheel drive, catering to diverse preferences. While specific details regarding the truck's design are yet to be revealed, Kia's emphasis on practicality and performance is expected to shine through.
In terms of powertrain options, the new Kia truck is anticipated to leverage Kia and Hyundai's 4-cylinder and V6 turbo diesel engines. Potential engine choices may include a 2.2-liter 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engine boasting 198 horsepower and 440 Nm of torque, as well as a 3.0-liter turbo diesel V6 engine delivering 246 horsepower and 560 Nm of torque.
Kia has outlined its expansion plans for the project, targeting markets in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. However, the initial focus will be on capitalizing on the robust demand in Australia, a market known for its highly competitive pickup segment.
With its sights set on taking on the renowned Hilux and other established contenders, Kia is poised to make a significant impact in the medium pickup truck market, bringing its unique blend of style, performance, and reliability to discerning customers worldwide.
