Reaching New Heights: Khunjerab Pass ATM in Pakistan Claims World's Highest ATM Title at 15,397 Feet
Picture yourself driving amidst the breathtaking mountains near the Pakistan-China border, soaring over 15,000 feet above sea level when suddenly, you find yourself in need of cash. Fear not, for the "World's Highest ATM" awaits your arrival, ready to assist.
According to the National Bank of Pakistan, the ATM stationed at Khunjerab Pass proudly holds the distinction of being the world's highest. Nestled in the picturesque Karakoram Mountains, this ATM stands tall at an impressive altitude of 15,397 feet. Khunjerab Pass serves as a gateway between Pakistan's Gilgit-Baltistan Hunza-Nagar District and China's Xinjiang region.
Installing and maintaining an ATM at such an extreme altitude presented numerous challenges for the bank. Ovais Asad Khan, Divisional Head of the Strategic Marketing Division, expressed gratitude to the local team, Pakistan Army, and local authorities for their unwavering support. In their quest for this remarkable achievement, the bank sought guidance from the Guinness Book of World Records to determine the requisite height criteria. As part of its commitment to sustainability, the ATM harnesses renewable energy sources, primarily solar power, and a wind turbine, ensuring its operations round the clock.
While the ATM primarily caters to the needs of tourists who often require immediate access to cash, it has also become a beloved landmark for the local population. Khan highlighted its strategic location along the main highway, serving as the starting point of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). While some visitors view it as an intriguing marketing ploy, like Sheharzad Kaleem, others question its necessity given the presence of additional ATMs in the nearby town of Sost.
Beyond cash withdrawals, the ATM offers convenient bill payment and fund transfer services. Special measures are implemented to guarantee uninterrupted operation, especially during the harsh winter months when temperatures plummet below freezing. The nearby branch in Sost City vigilantly monitors the ATM's status, ensuring a steady supply of cash for users.
Previously, the title of the world's highest ATM belonged to an installation in India. Union Bank of India set up an ATM at Nathu-La, a mountain pass on the historic Silk Route, at an altitude of approximately 14,300 feet back in 2007.
The Khunjerab Pass ATM not only provides essential financial services but also represents a remarkable feat of engineering and a symbol of human ingenuity in the face of daunting geographical challenges.
